Automobile insurance in Ontario is government regulated. To operate a motor vehicle in Ontario the following mandatory coverages are required:
Mandatory Coverages
Third-party Liability of at least $200,000: We strongly recommend limits of $1,000,000 or higher to protect yourself in the event that the driver of your vehicle injures someone or damages someone’s property.
Uninsured Automobile Coverage: Required in the event the owner of the vehicle that injured you or caused damage to your vehicle doesn’t have any insurance.
Statutory Accident Benefits: Provides medical payments and scheduled death and disability benefits to uninsured persons regardless of fault.
Direct Compensation for Property Damage: This coverage ensures that to the extent you are not at fault, your insurance company pays for the damage to your vehicle.
There are numerous optional coverages and endorsements available under the automobile policy. Highlighted below are just a few of the essential coverages for your benefit.
Optional Coverages
Increased Accident Benefits
Indexing of the income replacement benefits
Increasing the weekly income replacement benefits limit from $400
Additional $1,000,000 limit for medical, rehabilitation and attendant care expense
Increased benefits for unpaid caregivers for expenses required to hire a replacement caregiver
Insurer death benefit
Collision or Upset: Provides coverage for damage caused when your vehicle is involved in a collision.
Comprehensive Coverage: Provides coverage for all losses, other than collision or upset.
Specified Perils: Damage caused by fire, theft, lightning, windstorm, hail or rising water, earthquake, explosion, riot or civil disturbance; falling or forced landing of aircraft or parts of aircraft; or the stranding, sinking, burning, derailment or collision of any kind of transport in, or upon which the vehicle is being carried on land or water.
All Perils: Combines collision and comprehensive coverage.
Loss of Use OPCF #20: Provides car rental coverage for you when your vehicle is not usable due to loss or damage caused by a peril for which you are insured.
Waiver of Depreciation OPCF#43: Waives depreciation for a specific period of time to the original owner of the automobile damaged by an insured peril. Each insurer provides a different time limit.
Family Protection Coverage OPCF #44: Provides limited protection to you and specified family members due to injury caused by another motorist who has less liability insurance than you do. The coverage pays for the difference between the liability limit and the limit carried by the other motorist at fault.
Liability for Damage to Non-owned Automobiles OPCF#27: Extends the physical damage coverage on your automobile to vehicles that are leased, hired, rented or borrowed by you.
As this is a brief description of the coverages available, please refer to the Ontario Automobile Policy form (OAP 1) for the exact legal wordings.
